Freshen Up on Summer Boating Safety for National Fishing & Boating Week

You may have seen our blog post earlier this week where we shared some simple, easy-to-remember tips on how to fish safely from a boat. But we weren’t finished and wanted to give you even more tips to celebrate National Fishing & Boating Week.

.

So, whether you’ve hauled in thousands of fish throughout your life or you’re looking to reel in your first, be sure to keep the following boating safety tips in mind, both this week and beyond:

.

  • Wear your Life Jacket – Anytime you’re out boating, it’s important to wear a life jacket. This is especially critical when fishing since you’re moving around, standing up and leaning over the edge of the boat.

.

If you don’t have a properly fitting life jacket for everyone on board, stop by one of our Life Jacket Loaner Stations and borrow one to use for the day! And remember that the Coast Guard requires all children under age 13 to wear life jackets at all times while on board.

.

While you’re out on the water with your life jacket, share your catch with us on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #vestfriends. You may even get your photo featured!

.

  • Designate a Sober Skipper – Always be sure to designate a Sober Skipper before leaving the dock. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, and these effects are only made worse with the sun, heat and motion of the boat on the water.

.

Alcohol is the leading known contributor in fatal boating accidents, and it is illegal to Boat Under the Influence (BUI) in all waters across the country, so for everyone’s safety, be sure to have a Sober Skipper at the helm.

.

  • Use an Engine Cut-Off Device – When fishing from a boat, it is important to utilize a wireless engine cut-off device like the one made by Autotether. Each angler wears a device on his/her life jackets and if anyone accidentally ends up in the water, the engine is automatically shut off to avoid the danger of propeller strikes. And, during National Fishing & Boating Week, Autotether is offering 10% off their devices using the code STFoundation.

.

  • Have Fun! – There are few pastimes quite like fishing. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the weather and pass on a tradition to those we cherish most.
