Projects and Programs Reports: Boating Safety Challenge

The Sea Tow Foundation's Boating Safety Challenge has been presented to thousands of boaters across the country over the past three years. This interactive effort teaches participants about boating safety concepts in a fun way. For instance, a life jacket relay race teaches boaters how to properly fit a life jacket in less than 30 seconds. Coincidentally, this is about the same length of time that a boater would have to do the same task in an emergency.

Participants are also challenged to complete a ten-question quiz on boating safety topics. "Many boaters are surprised when they are not able to answer all of the questions correctly," states Gail Kulp, executive director of the Sea Tow Foundation. "This often encourages them to take a boating safety course so that they can learn more." Rewards such as t-shirts or stickers are given away as incentives.

The local Sea Tow captains run the Boating Safety Challenge booth in conjunction with their Sea Tow booths. Their expert advice and years of on-water experience are put to good use when boaters need to ask them questions about boating safety.
