Proper Hydration is Key for On-Water Activities

While Abstaining From Alcohol is a No-Brainer, Remember to Stay Hydrated

 

When it comes to operating a boat safely, water should be the beverage of choice because even consuming small amounts of alcohol adds risk. Alcohol affects the body in many ways, and none of them are good when it comes to operating a boat. But forgetting to drink enough water can also have adverse consequences.

 

Environment

The effects of alcohol and drugs are greatly intensified by wind, vibration, the motion of the boat, noise and the sun. Alcohol is a depressant that accelerates mental and physical fatigue and can make a driver less safe as the day wears on.

 

Experience Level

Unlike operating an automobile — which most people do every day — the average boater only operates their boat 110 hours every year. People new to boating have been in fewer on-the-water situations and may have to think twice before performing tasks experienced boaters can do automatically. While this inexperience is magnified when consuming alcohol, no amount of experience can overcome the negative effects of drinking, which greatly reduces reaction time and situational awareness. Things can happen fast on the water and hesitation can be dangerous for all boat operators.

 

The 3 Detrimental Effects of Alcohol

  1. Physical Coordination: Poor balance is one of the telltale signs of drinking that’s made worse by a constantly moving boat. Reaction time is longer, and a boat operator’s ability to perform even simple tasks can be hindered.

     

  2. Vision: Drinking alcohol affects vision in many ways. Peripheral vision and depth perception are reduced. Night vision and the ability to focus are diminished. Alcohol consumption even affects the ability to distinguish between red and green markers.

     

  3. The Ability to Think Clearly: The ability to make good decisions is one of the most important attributes of a safe boat operator. Alcohol consumption leads to riskier behavior that is proportional to the amount consumed.

 

Water as a Beverage of Choice: Dehydration can also adversely affect a boat operator’s ability to drive safely. Dehydration can cause dizziness and reduced concentration, which can have serious consequences on the water. Being out in the sun all day requires all on board to make a concerted effort to drink fluids and nothing beats water. Although sports drinks can quench thirst, many are loaded with sugar, which is not good in large quantities. Even a sedentary adult loses 2.5 quarts of water a day and the U.S. Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine recommends women should consume at least 92 ounces of water a day and men at least 120 ounces for daily maintenance. But because boaters are outdoors, these levels should be increased.

 

Statistics Don’t Lie: Boating Under the Influence (BUI) statistics don’t lie. Last year, there were 296 accidents where alcohol consumption was the primary cause. During those accidents, 115 people died (39%). BUI is 100% preventable. Abstaining from alcohol while operating a boat keeps those onboard and nearby safer.

 

You can help eliminate BUI by taking the Sea Tow Foundation's pledge to be or to designate a sober skipper before every boating trip. To keep everyone on board safe, choosing water over beer is the right call.

The Sea Tow Foundation Backyard Water Relay!

 

As much fun as it is for the whole family to go out on a boat, there are days when getting to the water can be a challenge. That doesn’t mean that the family has to miss out on the summer fun! Think back to those fun memories of water balloon fights and take it to the next level with these fun water relay activities at home (no pool required)! Just wear a bathing suit and prepare to get wet!

 

  • Relay 1: Water Balloon “Hot Potato” Style.
    • Have players stand in a circle and toss a water balloon from person to person. Start playing music and at random intervals pause the music. Whoever is holding the water balloon when the music is off, or whoever pops the balloon, is out.
  • Relay 2: Balloon Roll.
    • Set a start and end point on the ground and mark with tape/chalk. Have players line up with a water balloon on the starting line. The player who can roll their water balloon to the finish line, without popping the balloon first, wins!
  • Relay 3: Popping as a Team.
    • Set a start and an end point on the ground and mark with tape/chalk. Divide into two teams. Set out one chair for each team and the finish line and place a water balloon on the seat of both chairs. The players will each take turns running from the start line to the chair to sit on the balloon until it pops. You will need to put a new balloon on after each one is popped. The first team to pop all of their balloons and race back to the start line wins.
  • Relay 4: Target practice.
    • Draw or place cut-out targets on the ground spaced apart in a line. Have all players stand at a starting line and try to throw the water balloon on the targets. If the balloon pops on the target, the team gets the points. For an added challenge, label the targets with math problems. Players will have to solve the problem and hit the correct target to get the points. First team to get 300 points wins!
  • Relay 5: Slipping’n’Sliding.
    • Lay out a tarp over the ground. Spray the tarp with water and a little bit of dish soap for maximum sliding. Continue to spray water on the tarp as each player has a turn sliding on the tarp. Time each player for the fastest speed to get from one end of the tarp to the next. Make sure that the area at the end of the tarp is clear so that no one hits a fence, tree or other items.
  • Relay 6: How Low Can You Go?
    • Turn on the hose and let the water come out at a steady stream. Each player must limbo under the water without getting wet! After everyone goes, lower the level of the water. Continue until everyone no one can clear the height.

Tow Bee Boating Safety Tip: Stay Hydrated!

Tow Bee wants all boaters to know that dehydration is a doozie. Long days out on your boat combined with constant sunshine can lead to dehydration quicker than you might realize; and when sugary drinks like soda and juice are involved, those risks can be even higher. So, when you’re packing up the cooler for a day out on the water, be sure to include plenty of water for everyone on board. That means several bottles for each passenger if you’re going to be out all day!
 
It is especially important to limit alcohol consumption while on the water or skip it all together. Alcoholic beverages mixed with the sun, motion of the boat and the heat can be a dangerous combination. But, if alcoholic drinks are included in your boating plans, please designate a Sober Skipper before leaving the dock to ensure everyone’s safety.
